Terminalia bellirica (Beleric Myrobalan). is member of family combretaceace, growing widely throughout the Indian subcontinent, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri-Lanka and South East Asia. It is used in several traditional medicines to cure various diseases. It has traditionally been used in the treatment of diarrhoea, cough, hoarseness of voice, eye diseases and scorpion-sting and as a hair tonic. T. bellirica is one of the three ingredients of the well-known drug Triphala, used routinely in Ayurvedic medicine to treat a wide variety of diseases. Fruit and fruit extracts of T. bellirica have shown a range of pharmacological activities, including antidiabetic, analgesic, antiulcer, antifungal, antibacterial and anti-hypertensive activity through in-vitro and in-vivo studies.
