Commonly known as blue trumpet vine or laurel clock vine, Thunbergia laurifolia is a popular ornamental vine in the tropics. They are used as an antidote for poisons and drugs, including the treatment of drug addiction. The plant has also been reported to have antioxidant, anti-diabetic, anti-inflammatory, and antipyretic properties. Local herbal companies are producing herbal teas and capsules of T. laurifolia, known as Rang Jeud in Thai.

“Rang Jeud” is the Thai name for Thunbergia laurifolia Linn., an Acanthaceae vine widely distributed in Southeast Asia. Small oblong or oval leaves and blueish-purple flowers characterize Rang Jeud, a shrub native to India and Pakistan. Depending on the color of the flowers, it can be divided into three types: white, yellow, and purple types. It is believed that purple varieties contain compounds that are beneficial to health, primarily in the stem, root and leaves. In Thai traditional medicine, it has been widely used as an antipyretic and antidote for many years.

The aqueous extract of this plant is also claimed to treat alcoholism. Pharmacological effects include hepatoprotective activity and the presence of oxidants. Rang Jeud contains flavonoids such as apigenin, cosmosiin, and delphinidin-3,5-di-O—D-glucoside as active components
