Description
Caesalpinia sappan L., commonly known as Sappanwood or Brasilwood, is a small thorny tree in the family Fabaceae, native to Southeast Asia and South Asia, including Thailand, Malaysia, India, and China. It is historically one of the most important sources of natural red dye in Asia, with the heartwood yielding brazilin — a vibrant red pigment that was traded across Asia and to Europe along ancient maritime routes. In addition to its commercial value as a dye plant, Sappanwood has been an important medicinal plant in Traditional Chinese Medicine, Ayurveda, and traditional Thai medicine for centuries. In TCM, it is known as Su Mu and is used as a blood-activating herb to promote circulation, dispel blood stasis, and reduce swelling and pain. Traditional applications include treatment of menstrual disorders, traumatic injuries, and inflammatory conditions.
