Aegle marmelos (L.) Correa (A. marmelos), commonly known as Bael belonging to the family Rutaceae, has been widely used in indigenous systems of Indian medicine due to its various medicinal properties. Bael fruits are also used in the treatment of chronic diarrhea, dysentery, and peptic ulcers, as a laxative and to recuperate from respiratory affections in various folk medicines. It also has been used extensively in the treatment of dysentery and diabetes as recommended by Indian Ayurveda. Aegle Marmelos is rich in anti-oxidants which helps in insulin secretion which leads to low blood sugar levels. Bel is known for its medicinal values because of the presence of many bio-chemical substance such as alkaloids, antioxidants, polysaccharides, and essential oils.
