Description
Salacia chinensis Linn., also known as Salacia or Ponkoranti in some regional traditions, is a climbing shrub in the family Celastraceae, native to Sri Lanka, India, and Southeast Asia. It belongs to the Salacia genus — a group of plants with strong Ayurvedic and traditional medicine credentials for metabolic health management, particularly blood sugar regulation and anti-obesity applications. Salacia plants have been used for over three thousand years in Ayurvedic medicine under the name Saptarangi, traditionally prescribed for prameha (a classical category of metabolic disorders encompassing diabetes) and other metabolic conditions. The roots and stems are the primary medicinal parts, containing the plant’s most concentrated bioactive compounds.
