Piper sarmentosum Roxb., commonly known as Wild Pepper, Betel Vine, Kaduk in Malay, or Cha Phlu in Thai, is a low-growing perennial herb in the Piperaceae family, native to South and Southeast Asia, including India, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines. It is widely used both as a culinary ingredient and as a medicinal plant across the region, particularly in Thai and Malay traditional medicine and cuisine. The large, glossy, heart-shaped leaves are consumed fresh in Thai cuisine as wrapping leaves for miang kham — a traditional Thai snack — and are also used to wrap food in Malay cooking. In traditional medicine, Piper sarmentosum has been applied to treat hypertension, diabetes, fever, inflammation, and oxidative stress-related conditions.
