Kaempferia parviflora, commonly known as Thai black ginger, has been traditionally used to boost energy and male vitality. But what does modern science say about its effects?
Findings from a Randomized Controlled Trial
A study published in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine conducted an 8-week randomized controlled trial with male participants divided into three groups:
- Placebo group
- Kaempferia parviflora extract 25 mg/day
- Kaempferia parviflora extract 90 mg/day
Key Results
- The group taking 90 mg/day showed a significant reduction in response time to erotic visual stimuli.
- They also had a notable increase in penile size, both in the flaccid and erect states, compared to placebo.
Hormonal Effects
Importantly, there was no significant change in FSH or LH levels, indicating that its mechanism is unlikely due to increased testosterone but rather enhanced blood flow (vasodilation) and nitric oxide pathways.
Cautions
Although this was a well-designed trial, the sample size was relatively small. Larger and longer-term studies are needed to confirm its effectiveness across broader populations.
