Acmella Oleracea (Phak Krad Hua Wean): What is it?

Perhaps known as Spilanthes or Para Cress, a powerful medicinal herb found in Asia and South America. This member of the Asteraceae has been used for centuries as a topical treatment, as well as an antidote and pain management for wounds and infection. Acmella Oleracea is an upright or prostrate perennial plant. The plant is often cultivated as an annual for its edible leaves in parts of the tropics. It is also grown widely as an ornamental because of the attractive colorful heads. Raw Acmella leaves and flower heads have a pungent taste which causes numbing of the mouth when chewed and induce the production of saliva.

The Side Effects

There are no reported side effects with the use of Spilanthes in humans. However, Acmella Oleracea is not suitable for those who have prostate cancer. Animal studies show that Spilanthes stimulates male hormone production which may affect the actions of the drugs used to treat prostate cancer.

Clinical Information

The study of Acmella Oleracea on the activity of pancreatic lipase revealed that found the ethanol extract of flower buds of the plant had lipase inhibitory activity which has the potential of being developed into an anti-obesity drug. The ethyl-acetate extract of A. oleracea was found to produce immediate vasorelaxation of rat thoracic aorta. This effect was mediated via endothelium induced nitric oxide and prostacyclin.

Official Researches

In a research studying on pharmacological effects of Acmella Oleracea on its anti-inflammatory and analgesic of muscles in rats revealed that after being given 250-500/kg, the extract effectively began to reduce pain within 30 minutes.  Further research studying of Acmella Oleracea on rats also pointed out the same results that after feeding 25% concentrated extract of Acmella Oleracea, the results showed tremendously instant anesthetic effect to rats. In human study, the effects of Acmella Oleracea in relieving pain were also found to be effective. The participants were tested their pain with 10% concentrated Acmella Oleracea extract and lidocaine 10%, a medication used to numb tissue in a specific area. The results showed that Acmella Oleracea is as effective as lidocaine.
