Hibiscus sabdariffa L. (Hs, roselle; Malvaceae, Jamaica sorrel) has been used traditionally as a food, in herbal drinks, in hot and cold beverages, as a flavouring agent in the food industry and as an herbal medicine. Having various medically important compounds called phytochemicals, is well known for its nutritional and medicinal properties. Hibiscus sabdariffa L is rich in organic acids including citric, malic, tartaric and allo-hydroxycitric acids. The plant is also known for its Beta carotene, vitamin C, protein and total sugar. Hibiscus sabdariffa L.  is an aromatic, astringent, cooling herb that is much used in the Tropics. It is said to have diuretic effects, to help lower fevers and is antiscorbutic. Hibiscus sabdariffa L.  plays a crucial role in treating different medical problems including many cardiovascular disorders, helmenthic disease and cancer. The plant also acts as an anti-oxidant and used in obesity management.
