Smilax glabra Roxb. (SGR) is the root of a traditional Chinese herb, belonging to the family Liliaceae, also can be found in Thailand. It is a traditional Chinese medicine commonly used for the treatment of liver diseases. A few studies have indicated that SGR has anti-hepatocarcinogenic and anti-cancer growth activities. The rhizome of Smilax glabra has been used for a long time as both food and folk medicine in many countries. It possesses potential anti-inflammatory activities that this plant is generally consumed as a substitute for tea and sugar to prevent scurvy, and for treating a range of different conditions such as chest ailments, rheumatism, leprosy, impotence, syphilis, and so forth.
