Barleria lupulina (Hophead) is an attractive ornamental used a medicinal herb. The plant is reported to help smoothen skin and cuts back pimples. It also helps control blood glucose (sugar) level. Its leaves are used for treating swellings, bleeding wounds and boils.

The plant is externally used as an anti- inflammatory against insect bites, snake bites, herpes simplex, herpes zoster and varicella zoster virus lesions and it also has a diuretic effect and anti-amoebic activities. It is also used for its medicinal importance as the leaf juice is given to stop bleeding when cut and leaf paste is used as poultice to relief pain.
